What Separates Contractors

Most Metal Roofing Bids Look Alike. The Work Behind Them Does Not.

Two quotes can name the same panel and still describe very different roofs. These are the four places where contractors actually differ, and where a careful homeowner can tell them apart.

01

The License Behind the Name

A company name on a truck tells you little. The CSLB record tells you who holds the license, which classes it covers, whether it is active and whether bonds and workers comp are on file.

The People on the Roof

Standing seam is unforgiving of rushed flashing work. Ask whether the crew works for the company you hire, or for someone the company hires.

Questions to Ask →

03

Who Makes the Panels

Panels formed to the measured length of each roof plane avoid end laps on most residential runs. Ask where and how yours will be made.

What the Bid Leaves Out

Deck repair, underlayment, flashings and permits are where bids quietly differ. A clear scope names them; a vague one leaves them for later.

In-House Fabrication

Why In-House Fabrication Belongs on Your Checklist

A standing seam roof is made, not just installed. The panels, ridge caps, valleys and wall flashings all come from coil that is formed into shape, and the quality of that forming shows up in how the roof fits and how it looks from the street.

We custom-fabricate every panel and trim piece in our own shop in Van Nuys, cut to the measured length of the roof plane it goes on. When a contractor forms their own panels, the people who measured your roof answer for the fit. When panels are bought in, ask who is responsible if a run comes up short.

We also install corrugated metal and metal roofing that imitates shake, tile or slate, with standing seam as our specialty.

Comparing Bids

How to Compare Two Metal Roofing Bids Side by Side

Lay the bids next to each other and read them line by line. If a line is missing, it is not necessarily a bad bid, but it is a question worth asking before you sign.

Line on the BidWhat a Clear Bid SaysWhat to Ask If It Is Missing
Panel and Metal

Panel profile, seam type, metal and gauge, and the finish system by name.

Which panel, which gauge, and which finish?

Tear-Off and Deck

Full tear-off to the deck, and how damaged sheathing is found, shown to you and priced.

What happens if the deck is soft under the old roof?

Underlayment

The underlayment product, and whether it covers the whole roof.

Is a high-temperature underlayment used under the metal?

Flashings

Valleys, walls, chimneys, skylights and edges, formed for this roof.

Are flashings formed in-house to fit, or off the shelf?

Permit

Who pulls the permit and schedules the inspections.

Whose name is on the permit?

Warranties

The finish warranty from the coil maker, and the contractor's workmanship warranty, in writing.

Can I see both warranties before I sign?

Payment Schedule

A down payment within the California limit, then payments tied to work completed.

What is due when, and for which stage of work?

Our Process

How We Run a Metal Roof Project

If we end up on your shortlist, this is what working with us looks like, from the first visit to the final inspection.

  1. Visit and Measure

We look at the roof, the attic where we can, and measure every plane, hip, valley and opening.

  2. Written Scope

You get a proposal that names the panel, finish, underlayment and each flashing detail.

  3. Permit

We pull the permit with your city or county and schedule the inspections.

  4. Fabrication

Panels and trim are formed in our Van Nuys shop to your roof's measurements.

  5. Install and Close Out

Tear-off, deck repair, underlayment, flashings, panels, cleanup and final inspection.

FAQ

Choosing a Metal Roofing Contractor: Common Questions

How do I find the best metal roofing contractor in Los Angeles?

Start with what you can verify. Check the license on the CSLB website, ask who will actually install the roof, ask where the panels are made, and compare written scopes line by line. Our guide on how to choose a metal roofing contractor walks through each step.

Is "Best Metal Roofing Contractor" a rating or an award?

No. It is the name of this website. Best Metal Roofing Contractor is operated by Eclipse Remodeling & Roofing Inc, dba Eclipse Metal Roofing, CSLB #888710. We would rather give you the tools to judge any contractor, including us.

What license should a metal roofing contractor have in California?

Roofing work is covered by the C-39 Roofing classification issued by the Contractors State License Board. Some metal roofers also hold C-43 Sheet Metal. Our metal roofing contractor license check guide shows how to look one up.

What questions should I ask before hiring a metal roofer?

Ask who installs the roof, where the panels are made, what underlayment and flashings are included, who pulls the permit, and what both warranties cover. We list them with what a good answer sounds like on our questions to ask a metal roofing contractor page.

What types of metal roofing do you install?

Standing seam is our specialty. We also install corrugated metal and metal roofing that imitates shake, tile or slate. Every roof we install is on a home; we are a residential company.
